40 years ago my finger pulled the trigger in anger for the last time, and, scurrying through three wars came more or less unscathed at the other end of that tunnel.
I will repost this one on the 50th anniversary, if I am still alive, if not, some Iraq Veteran should add a few lines to this remembrance.
"Walther" says to everyone and
"that" Marines Special Forces,
but not less, to the Veterans
scattered by the wind
after the battle's end,
I wish you hear a word or two
on this oncoming Memorial Day...
all of you served with courage,
and behind, you didn't leave
no one on the battle field,
I will remember all of you
as I remember all of them,
those that didn't came back
from the senseless mayhem,
in Okinawa beach in '44,
at Korea's Inchon's hell
or dying back enemy lines
holding all the dominoes up
so Vietnam didn't fell,
some of you will remember
their code names very well,
Kenny, Roscoe and Mister Lee,
Sereno, Bom-Bom and myself,
we were the ones that crossed
the rivers where all the demons
went to take a bath and never left,
the ones roaming in the swamps,
dirty green, with the jungle melt,
we were called the tunnel-rats,
the ones coming with the Reaper,
by Vietcong's frightened men.
Almost forty years in Memorial Day
for some of us of that final battle,
and like General Patton I wish to say:
"Soldiers never die,
they fade away."
Oh wow, what a moving write my friend...very touching and heartfelt! A bit of sadness within the lines, but a reminder to all that we should not allow our memories of our soldiers that have served and died fade away...enjoyed this much!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

Let them never fade in memory!! I cannot imagine how much courage it took to so much as step into one of those tunnels. Add a thank you from my husband and me. Our whole family and all our friends!! You and the others who served deserve far more respect and much more generosity -- more benefits[!!!] -- than you have so far received.
Thank you for this vivid and touching tribute. 'Pea' <3

In your honor today and all those days that you remember in your words. War is what it is and it bears what it bears. I hope everyone this weekend can honor those who have fought willingly or not because we live in America because of those who have fought. LadyJ
A beautiful Love Offering for our True Heroes! We owe them so much and give so little back in return! I just wish to say," THANK-YOU and GOD BLESS YOU ALL!" SC
Wishing you well and sending thanks for your expressions and thoughts that give us the view into a Soldier's world. It is sad that we must work to understand the trajedies of war and the difficult time so many went through. It is also a great Honor to have even met one man, one woman, One Soldier who has stepped upon the battlefield to place his life in jeopardy and or given his life to defend the freedom that so many million enjoy.
You are one of these individuals and I am honored to say you are my friend and I thank you for having stepped upon the battlefied...
This is a time to reflect and Honor those who sacrificed and passed on ....never dying...
Dear Georg,
I thank you for all your years of hardship and service. You are clearly a sturdy soul to have survived all those battle calls. Those of us who have never seen, felt, heard nor smelt a battle scene can never truly comprehend its utterly transforming impact...
It is vital to honor and remember those who serve and die for their country. My own family's history of service in the USA dates from pre-Revolutionary War times. More recently, having lost five uncles to the long-term consequences of WWII battle wounds and cherishing two brothers who "survived" Vietnam, Memorial Day observance has long been a time of private reflection and prayer... May the memory of those who served NEVER fade away!
Peace be with, Battle-scarred Poet,

Thank You Georg

God bless you for your service! Thank you for this superb tribute which honors our brave warriors. Though war is hell ,sometimes it is a must, and we have to pay tribute to those who fought, were injured, or died, for we would have no freedom without them!
Your words convey the depth of emotion that only a Soldier can know, for the taste of freedom has its true flavor only to those who have served. There are no words of gratitude that ring loudly enough from the rest of us, as though we live with regret and empathetically, we are unable to truly understand the impact of being in battle, of closing the eyes on a good friend for the last time and of carying his/her limp body to a place where it will be safe for its return trip home. You honor our Fallen well, Georg. Thank you for this message of rememberance.
