Almost 40 years since Vietnam, and only in the last few, are those vets, finally, being honored, and treated with the respect, due them.

Poem Artwork

I'm home, I'm fine, and as you can see,

have all my pieces and parts, God was,

good to me.

Bout Vietnam, that's what I'd say, and did say for years.

It took over 30, to say, any more, without, the memories, spurring, tears.
Now, it's Iraq, and those coming back, say the same, God, was good to me.

What they leave out, they can't talk about,

but, a welcome home and a job well done,
are phrases, that make, their day.
I know, cause that's not what, we heard,
when we finally got off the plane;

Baby killer, and murderer, they jeered,
those words, caused, so much, pain.

The country was split, the moods were black,
but each and every day, they drew new numbers, and sent our boys, to jungles, far away.

Riots in Chicago, slayings in LA, when, running off to Canada, seemed a better way.

Couldn't really blame them, they didn't even declare it, war, our sons, dying and maimed

and no one knew, what for.

Mandatory, entrance, without a, back door.

After all these years, a little at a time, their service is being recognized, their ills are treated too,

And still I hear the ridiculous words, bout who's supporting who?

It's not our taxes, or, our social security,

that pays for the medicine, or the claims that are finally being honored, from that confusing time in American, history.

So on this Veterans Day, If a, Nam vet, you know, tell them that your thankful, for what they did, in those, torrid, fetid jungles, so long ago.

Give them a salute, and give them a hug,
and don't be surprised

If your attitude, and thankfulness, bring tears to their eyes.

Then salute, and thank, ALL the troops, men and women too, who, have and are still, giving, their, very lives;
for the freedom we take for granted, and count your blessings, that it could,
just as easy be,

your, son or daughter, or maybe even you,
Called, to serve, to keep,

our country FREE.

I respected that!
and always will...
