OPUS: Degrees of Light

Music & Lyrics: Rhonda S. Galizia

A Candle: The First Degree

I write, by the light, of a Candle
I wax strong, and write long, into the night;
For my name, by Its flame, shall be remembered
My lament, by Its scent, forever stilled.

HERE I AM, LORD...HERE AM I
TELL ME WHY, LORD...AND WHO? AM I

I drudge on, dusk to dawn, filling the spaces;
In my haste, I lay waste, to the quill in my hand
Defeated will, mt tears spill, onto the pages
Now, what I think, just blots of ink...
Stains, on white desert sands.

When comes new eve, I believe, I can start over!
I devote, to each note, my greatest attention;
With aching heart, I restart, my music again
These words I choose - must not lose! -
I am writing for HIM!

By the morn, I am worn - and my head's in my hands
A whispered prayer: Is Someone there,
Who truly does understand?

I arise, close my eyes; I can't take any more!
The pain is cruel - I'm such a fool -
And I slam shut the door!

CAN it be?  It's NOT for me?
Sobs wrack my shoulders;
There's no reply, just the sigh...
Of a Candle, that smoulders.

HERE I AM, LORD  HERE AM I
TELL ME WHY, LORD...AND WHO, AM I.

* Ivy Patton was my very first Sunday School Teacher...After decades had spent themselves,  I found her again, before she passed away.  I sent her a letter to express my love and thankfulness for the seeds she had planted, [she used to sit me beside her, at the piano, or on her lap, and have me sing "This Little Light of Mine"  -  i.e. my Candle] and to let her know, what the harvest was: The LORD had made a Scribe & Pianist out of me!  WHO KNEW!!!
She wrote back to me, rejoicing, and gracious, in the same lovely handwriting, I remembered as a child......oh, Miss Ivy was soft and pink and round, and so beautiful!  As Ladies were created to be...give her a kiss for me, Jesus, and let her know that this little light of mine, has grown and grown...because of those early nurturing years.

Your poems are always so uplifting and what a blessing you were able to convey to Ivy your feelings for what she did for you. There are people in our lives that leave a lasting impression and oft times we never get to tell them. May the Holy Spirit always light up your life and comfort you in your travail.

I'm so glad you've got the chance to write to your teacher, and she's got the chance to read what you write. This is amazing. Well-done!
