Have you ever noticed how everyday things can cause you to reflect on those carefree childhood days? Like a breeze that subtly blows across your face or the beauty of autumn leaves falling. I had another one of those wonderful visits from my childhood. Days when baseball was all we cared about and not even a thundershower would deter us.

Poem Artwork

It is a warm clear day in the middle of June.

A warm breeze reminds me it will be summer soon.

As I feel the breeze caress my face I am call to select

Upon which memories of my past my mind would recollect.

When I was a kid we played baseball all day long.

In the evening we watched the moon and stars and heard the crickets’ song.

Memories that stand out in my mind with their brilliance

Were the times when our ballgame was interrupted by the weathers turbulence.

Thundershowers would find us sitting in the dugout, watching in awe

As the lightning streaked across the sky to the sound of the thunder and we watched rain fall.

What a wonderful and glorious God did put on for our eyes to see.

A beautiful example of nature’s reverie.

Then came the over powering glory as the sun broke through the cloud.

We had thought of the sound of the thunder as the roar of our imaginary crowd.

The glorious sun soon became more thrilling as it lit up the sky.

We were young and took no heed to wet and did not stop to sigh.

We once again left the dugout and our game was started again.

The rain had now moved over the mountains as quickly as it began.

Those memories are worth more than mere words can tell.

They call my mind from today’s troubles to a world were all was well.

Life at it's best, when we were kids....I think that is the reason that I enjoy reflecting and writing about my days of youth, they were peaceful with little to no cares in the world. A time of playing, exploring, sharing, and then the teens...well that's a different story all together. You've penned a write dear friend that took me back to a simple time that I too enjoyed, we also had a few summers that all we did was play ball, it was great fun for cousins and neighbors to gather in the field, which was also papaw's cow pasture, but it made a great baseball field....those were the days. Enjoyed this trip down memory lane my friend, you've penned it well!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
