Recent fires, likely the result of global warming, have threatened the electrical grid in California. All around the earth similar changes are affecting the technology-based system that we rely on to provide us with a style of life that only kings had prior to 1900. But we rely on technology too much and it's too centralized, especially when it comes to water, food and communication. All very fragile and can easily break down as described in my book, The Last Wanderer. Drastic change in the way we do business has to happen very soon.

Technosystem Fear

For 2 billion years or more,

the earth's ecosystem flourished.

Moving into every niche of planet,

finding ways to grow, get nourished.

But 10,000 years ago humans had arrived,

at the brilliant conclusion of their worth.

Domesticating animals and plants to their will,

taming the wild cycles of nature on the earth.

Using fire to make metals,

written words to make plans.

Carving out tribal territories,

laying claim to some lands.

Ecosystem suffered destruction,

with every human advance.

But always continued to evolve,

where humans had no chance.

Humans could not stop,

our growing technical girth.

Each new technology brought,

more safety, comfort and worth.

The web of technology grew,

connecting cities and towns.

With no thought to sustainability,

no guidelines or limited grounds.

The resulting techno-dependency,

of everyone, everywhere, on earth.

Leaves so many in despair and poverty,

and others with apparent great worth.

But the system is fragile, susceptible,

costly to continue to maintain.

It grows with financial expediency,

like our population in the main.

Until the entire ecosystem,

supporting all human life,

has been stressed to the limit,

more and more will face strife.

While technosystem's infrastructure,

so complex and overextended.

In many places breaking down,

too expensive to be mended.

The challenge of the 21st-century,

is to move forward into outer space.

Because the human technosystem,

progress’s legacy, is a failing disgrace.

IT IS MY HOPE AND PRAYER THAT WE LEAVE OUR BELOVED OUTER SPACE...ALONE!!! I MEAN, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO...MESS THAT UP TOO?!? OF COURSE PROGRESS, THE WAY WE HAVE DONE IT AND ARE STILL DOING IS A DISGRACE AND SOMETHING TO FEAR, AND DO YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE, THE LOVE OF GOD AND HUMANITY IS NON-EXISTENT. MODERN, 'INTELLECTUAL' PIONEERS CONTINUE TO MAKE A VERY PRACTICAL MISTAKE; AND THIS IS NOT JUST IN TECHNOLOGY BUT IN EVERYTHING THEY DO; THEY ARE GREEDY, SELFISH AND SPOILED AND GO AFTER AND GET WHAT THEY WANT AT ANY COST REGARDLESS! AND THIS IS DONE WITHOUT PROPERLY WEIGHING THE 'SEVERE COST' OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING OR WHO OR WHAT THEY ARE, LITTLE BY LITTLE, DESTROYING. THEY ARE NOT LOOKING FAR ENOUGH INTO THE FUTURE SO THAT WHAT 'COULD HAPPEN' IS UNIMPORTANT AS LONG AS THEY GET WHAT THEY WANT FOR THE PRESENT. NOW THAT THEY'VE MESSED UP EARTH, THEY ARE EYEING SPACE SO THEY CAN DESTROY THAT TOO! SCARY??? INDEED!!! "...EVEN SO, COME LORD JESUS!..." THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Exactly! Everything! Yes! I think about stuff like this. No wonder I can't sleep! Asteroid belts! When everything out there starts sparking and sizzling, oh my! what shall we do? I found this piece astounding!

Love ya!

I sincerely hope I do not live to see our techno-systems coming to an end, for I am not sure I am strong enough to be able to handle that loss...-e-

You raise a very important point here, Ron, exploring the limitations of the technology that we have created and now desperately rely.

A couple of lines left me wondering:

"At the brilliant conclusion of their worth", not sure what that might have meant 10,000 years ago.

Also, your 4th stanza I find troublesome. "Where humans had no chance"? Not clear what this may mean within its context, at least to me.
