While artists make use of low winter light like this, those in sick beds like so many with one form of coronavirus or another, watching the light move across the room is all they can do for a short time every day when it peeks through their windows.

Winter Solstice Light

At the darkest time of year,

the earth, on its axis, here,

leans away from the sun,

in the Northern Hemisphere.

Leaving the days very short,

the nights long, cold and dark,

when fever and death do run,

misery leaving its devilish mark.

But while the darkness,

speaks of coming doom,

light reaches every room.

At certain parts of the day,

like peeking through windows,

for a first and very short stay.

For the artist's delight,

casts  light and shadows,

on still life just right.

Emblazoning woodsmoke,

and dust motes afloat,

aerial magic nature wrote.

Imaginary kingdoms in the air,

dispersing winter doldrums,

from sickbed sight debonair.

So quickly magic light wanes,

shadows grow once more,

into the long dark night again,

and misery returns like before.

WINTER SOLSTICE LIGHT...REVEALS THE BEAUTY OF OUR SURROUNDINGS THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE. WHEN IT PASSES WE MUST REMEMBER THE BEAUTY OF THE CREATED THINGS ARE STILL VERY MUCH THERE...ONLY HIDDEN. IT'S SORT OF LIKE; THE SUN DURING A STORM. WHEN THE CLOUDS ARE COVERING IT WE CAN'T SEE IT, BUT IT HASN'T GONE...THE SUN LIGHT IS STILL VERY MUCH THERE, ONLY HIDDEN FROM OUR VIEW. BEAUTIFUL SHARING, ENJOYED. BY THIS WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THINGS THAT '...EYES HAVE NEVER SEEN...(2CORN 2:9)' AWAITING US. A very touching poem and certainly one that makes the reader think about the plight of those who are ill and confined to a hospital bed. Your words elicit compassion, Ron. Love and peace to you,

Regis. 🙏🌲🌳🛌🍁

Your poem gave me rich insight into the hearts and minds of those whose lives are limited by illness. Very well written. One of your best, I think.

From one who experienced the distress of SAD ( seasonal affective disorder) for many years,
I understand and value the importance of light for our overall well-being..
Any sunlight in these long dark days is so appreciated…
Artists relish the perfect light for their still life art during this time…
But thankfully the Earth does begin that return back into Spring and Summer…
All part of the wonderful and predictable cycles of our Planet Earth…
A very enjoyable piece Ron…

A lovely poem, well conceived, about the movement of winter light, combined with the idea of the winter solstice. I have also written about the solstice at some poet. I am fascinating by the idea that the earth, in its travels, meets some kind of end-point, marking the shortest day of the year, and then begins its monumental return back into spring and summer. Thank God it never forgets to make the switch; otherwise we would all float off into oblivion. Happy New Year, Ron.

Ron, thanks for your feedback regards my most recent poem. Rarely do I write anymore, nor do I post reviews much anymore, so consider yourself special...Hope you had a great holiday and over stuffed yourself...-e-

It's true that lack of light breeds depression, but at least we get some sunlight each day, unlike people above the arctic circle. And the good thing about the Winter Solstice is that for the next six months each day will be longer than the last.

And in their depths of feeling, hopefully there is a form of Gods love and mercy among their spirits
Wishing Gods speed for our country and its citizens. May this never happen again..Sending prayers of light and hope. Merry Christmas Ron
