Worth It

As a wee little gal in blue jeans and braids,

I had the sweetest kitten, grey with white feet.

She chased strings and jumped in boxes,

Then cuddled up so sweet to keep me warm.

And when a little older, she had a puppy dear,

Little Daisy was the very best friend,

This teenaged girl did have,

Such a  loyal pal, she stayed right by my side.

When all grown up she’d a beautiful colt,

His worth to her was priceless,

He pranced and preened then tossed his mane,

As he kicked up his heels in delight.

All along and as she grew, she had her dad as well,

He was strong and brave and taught her well,

To be true to herself, work hard, be kind,

And to treat others with respect and worth.

Now the kitten, the puppy, the colt and dad,

Have all with sadness passed on.

But the walks and the games, the cuddles and laughs,

Were all so worth all those tears that have fallen,

I wouldn’t have wanted to hang out here without them.

A beautiful write filled with wonderful memories you'll cherish always. Loss is such an humbling experience. We realize how much we had in the simplest things in our life. You were so lucky to have this kind of friendship with your pets and your loving dad.

Poignant feelings that touch everyone dear Karen. In certain ways our memories define how we percieve and express. They sure do me. Reminded me of Ecclesiates 3 - "for everything there is a season."

Beautiful commemoration poem, and your love of animals and respect for life and the living shines through.

The photograph of foal and mare is very tender.

Check out Francis Jammes' poem, 'The Donkeys of Heaven'. Very beautiful!

Memories were made, and that's what's most important: as long as you remember them, their legacies go on. Beautifully penned poignancy, Karen, well done.
