As we celebrate our 228th birthday this 4th of July with fireworks, grill and tong, I also entertain a fond remembrance for our great neighbor to the north. Canada has been a warm friend for many years. Here's to maintaining that friendship for many more American birthdays to come.

Poem Artwork

Oh Canada!

Would ever I leave you, sister land, brooding wonder of desolation,
As breaking heartstrings, every strand, cry wanton perambulation?

Sweet woodland delights explore, timber glades’ visceral calls,
Search out Nature’s wilderness store, embrace what mystery befalls.
Perhaps a moose calf will tiptoe by, in search of tranquility I stole,
And its mother casts baleful eye, suspicious of my innocent goal.

Wild ducks and geese whistle past, toward beaver pond hidden,
Silent shadows fleeting cast, wolves reflect presence unbidden.
Calm split — eagle’s cry harsh, mate’s fish catch isn’t sharing,
Small animals hide dale and marsh, fear sharp talons it’s bearing.

Deep azure skies — zany white-puffs, flower girl could easily pick,
Pressing eastward, west wind huffs, horizon dark becomes thick,
Virga swatches from silver mounds, hustle close in fast succession,
Spattering stings, roaring sounds, deluge — then rainbow recession.

Rain — sun — quiet — blow, weather builds two-day sodden squall,
Arctic breath whips whitecaps so, and sudsy shore froth arches tall.
By midday her wild tantrum spent, vast energy swirl passed on by,
Cold blast raced to where it went, cerulean reclamation reigns high.

Time to putter to the grassy bays, troll among pike a wobbling spoon,
Pass a spinner where the walleye lays, chill to wail of lonesome loon.
Would ever I leave you, sister land, brooding mistress of desolation,
When breaking heartstrings, every strand, cry wanton perambulation?

This is gorgeous, Leland!! Your words are perfection, the images, splendour itself, and, god, that picture...I could dive right in. Wonderful tribute, my friend. :)

How you make me long for a land I have not even yet managed to visit! The call of the wild is here, Leland, and you have painted a multi-layered scene of harmony and yet tension too, between all that is seen and unseen; noticed and ignored by hard-pressed urbanites! This poem speaks of a vastness and yet an intimacy and particularity, too. Wonderful - like the awe and respect you communicate here. Thank you for this - and for your visit to my page today, by stark contrast! I read your biog with great interest - you are truly multidimensional yourself! Best wishes, Kate

a fabulous vision of Canada-or at least one of our many realities. Taiga, prairie, Eastern seashore, West Coast Mountains, tundra , desert, and bustling cities-all thank you kindly.

Ahhhhh, Dear Leland... to read you again is a treat, to have you around, a joy. Some may walk ahead, describing, teaching, directing as we go... you climbed inside my head, painting, mesmerizing, exciting the journey through a place I've never been. To devote such beauty as this to connecting people and lands is, in this time, a warm and generous offering. Thank you for bringing me there. It's simply marvelous to see you. (smile) katy xox.

You ought to include a dictionary with this one, Leland, I learned a few new words and their meanings herein...a beautiful tribute to the neighbor we have to the north, never being there I cannot comment on it, but someday...I like that homemade dock in the picture, leading to a boat made just for fishing, or at least I see it that way...Peace lies therein, Ed & Rufuz

Your ability to bring the imagery to life is wonderful, Leland. It conjured up many memories of my visits there. I did have to laugh... the last time I was there, we joked about the plethora of signs (oh my gosh, everywhere!) cautioning us about the danger of moose crossings - and we never saw one, single moose.

So glad to see you posting again. Happy 4th!

I'm puzzled by the words used; but since everyone says it's a great poem, then I think it is too. Sometimes I can't seem to read things in the right manner.

Canada is great, with a lot of nice people in it. I think at least I can tell you this much.

Thank you for sharing your fine art of poetry!

Enticing and puzzling (so much desolation?) description, Leland, as well as a wonderful tribute to our neighborland. I never had the pleasure of visiting, but my Canadian friends have been a treasure.

Thanks for a lovely poem.
