Just a bit of observing as I strolled along a quiet path today......

Poem Artwork

  Freckle face boy.........

Large oak tree sits weathered and worn,
yet somehow speaks volumes of days gone by.
Branches hang down to hug mother earth,
leaves holding on as if asking why.

Clouds above serve as a protective cover,
while ripened roots spring from underground.
Carvings of hearts, names and arrows,
memories of lovers and children all around.

A red haired, freckle face boy makes claim,
to a very thick branch where a swing has
been tied.
Wiping the seat and climbing on board,
he begins his journey swaying side to side.

With his small hands he grips the ropes,
leans his body back and kicks up his feet.
Momentum has started, speed picking up,
before him he sees the ground and sky meet.

Imagination takes over as he swings higher,
away from reality to a magical place.
A sense of invincibility begins to take hold,
of this little boy with a sparkling face.

A warm breeze and a sense of adventure,
the world now his for exploring and learning.
One can only wonder what his thoughts are,
flying on his swing developing a yearning.

All in good time his questions will be answered,
for now having fun is the agenda for the day.
In time he will be older and dream of his swing,
tied to that old oak tree for another to play.

A swing! What a delicious feeling of freedom and lightness...
I love your description of the tree, there is so much magic in it already. Very evocative piece Karen, words to bring back memories to everyone.

I always did love swinging. I can feel my somach swooshing up to meet my throat just reading this poem. He's having an out-of-body experience up there in the clouds. Let him swing! --Charlie

Karen, I got a nice feeling in the pit of my stomach as I read this because it took me back to days of long ago where I would swing for hours and dream about the days to come. There's some fantastic images in this writing and it gives a reader lots to imagine. I loved it!

Karen this was pure nostalgia with imagery that brought it all back to me of swinging with the boys on ropes hung from trees, and later on seeing my own boys do the same. funny but I think it isn't done much today except on some country farms etc. Thanks for the memories!;-)

Love,
Eileen

The joy of swinging and the freedom that it elicits is something I still enjoy doing - with the grandchildren or by myself. Such a wonderfully lighthearted poem.

Like Jerry, I was a freckle faced boy and I also had red hair. I even fell out of trees twice.

I hope he had more trees than those he could climb before age took all the fun away.
Why is it that a freckle face gives so cuddly feelings?
