- Waking up to feel again -

Poem Artwork

A brown dog barks
from across the street;
it wakes her up, tense,
from a dreamless night.
She's tired of living
as if her coat's pockets
were full of broken glass.

She thinks.

It could have been better,
life, as a shelter:
no risks, less tears,
fewer regrets.
Instead, it was bitter,
like the taste on her tongue
after that dinner,
when she stood up,
ready to leave,
her hair thrown back
- with defiance -
facing a room
full of guests,
none of them her friends.

Then, memories of long ago.

In the sanctuary of her bedroom
often beaten and abused,
in the safety of her schoolyard
only jealousy and hatred,
in an attempt to find empowering roots,
only fleas and weeds.

Love had been her biggest hope,
her greatest disillusion,
yet she stood
against waves
thick as ink,
her armor shining
under the ripening sun.
Beneath the steel,
her skin still burns
but she can look at her future
without blinking,
until emotions are born
from the horizon,
as if rising to caress
what used to be her heart,
now a broken stone.

Incredible, the way that you write. Sad, poignant and beautiful...but within the last few lines, you leave the reader with hope.

May you always have money in your pockets, happiness, and love in your life. May the wind always be at your back. May you get to heaven a long time before the devil knows you are dead! Great write. I have walked in your shoes. I thought I recognized a fellow traveler. Many hugs and much love.

Beautiful! Very evocative imagery.
May your pockets be forever free of broken glass and may you live and dance in love, light, and laughter, always.

An intrinsic depicting of a suffering heart... "A Broken Stone" strikes the dynamo of imagination and takes the reader on trip to poemize the ontologic mysteries of living.

I thank the author of "A Broken Stone" for sharing this jewel from her creative treasure.

In admiration,

Axilea,
I want to draw the positive from this poem,
"but she can look at her future
without blinking,
until emotions are born
from the horizon,
as if rising to caress
what used to be her heart,
now a broken stone."

Yes dear one, the heart may feel broken, but in reality it really isn't, and I will tell you from experience, because I have been there many a times, you will heal and you will be stronger for the next time.
Much love, light, and peace,
Amber "V"

Axilea,

Life can beat ones heart and soul into submission. Sometimes we swallow what is laid before us out of obligation and not because it taste good. Cold is a heart of stone but warm is the one who melts that stone to lava. Bless You Always My Friend, Paul.

Stone cold and often too real in life. "Love....her greatest disillusion." very powerful statement that leads one to either hope more or become hopeless.

Life can leave a hardened heart within the emotional state of a soul...it is the every presence of one who can overcome the bitterness of a room full of unforgiving guests, like the ones we encounter along this journey called life...it is even more sad when that hardened heart becomes a broken stone split within the strength of driving forward...creating again the beginning of a new flow into the heart...

nice work...

"Pockets full of broken glass"? Drop-dead fabulous! This poem draws you in to her brain and spits you out at the sunrise--looking down upon her--hoping for the healing of her broken stone heart. --Charlie
