It's an adage,
A mantra,
A truth,
For those of us
Who work with animals.
We try to shield our hearts,
But occasionally
One slips past;
Like tonight
It was the phone call
From the young woman
With the healthy, orphaned kitten,
Just four weeks old,
We couldn't accept it,
And the other clinics
And shelters
Had told her
They would only
Euthanize it.
My heart aches,
How it aches!
I wish now
I'd told her
To bring it to me
No matter the fallout
At home.
Surely with me
It would have had
A fighting chance
At life.
Now I'll never know
It's fate.
So sorry for your woes. It is so very hard to say no, so very hard when we do, to accept it sometimes. You hurt over this but you are strong and kind and who knows? Maybe kitty heaven has a new fuzzy angel tonight, or a certain kitty found a loving mommy or daddy. I am moved by your sadness and regret.

Heartbreaking - happens all too often. I'd adopt every animal if I could - so they would have a loving home. But the apartment complex doesn't allow pets - and so, kittens and puppies go to shelters - it breaks my heart every time, because they can't all be saved -
Heartwrenching write; how can anyone do that to a little kitty is beyond me! Sad when nobody will adopt a kitty, and they end up being destroyed; tragic!!

As one who did choose a kitty from the local animal shelter, I gave her lots of love; she was the best pet I ever had!
