The early morning hours
Dawn quietly in shades
Of pink and gray,
Illumining the room
In a pearl-like glow.
The king-sized bed
Is mostly empty
As we snuggle close
Beneath the covers.
I am wrapped from behind
In your strength
And your breath falls soft
Upon my neck and ear.
Never have I felt so safe,
So loved.
I remember a lifetime past
When I dreamt of moments like this
And I send a gentle thought
To the me I once was.
Somewhere in the house
A clock sounds the hour
And you stir behind me,
Brushing a kiss
Across my bare shoulder
Before whispering,
"Are you awake?"
"Yeah," I answer
And shiver as you nibble your way
Along my skin.
We were friends long before
We became lovers,
You took the time
To know the person
Beneath the flaws;
In effect,
You became my knight,
My Gawain,
And as I turn into your arms
I become your beautiful lady.
