She ran
Through the wet morning,
Her bare feet
Covered with grass cuttings
And red clay mud,
The tears washed away
From her swollen eyes
By the endless rain
And the whipping
Of tree branches.
Dawn was an hour past
And her young heart still beat
With a pounding rhythm
Despite being shattered
By the cruelest of blows.
A night of bliss
Spent in the arms
Of a man
She had adored;
Her first time,
Believing all his words
His tender lies,
Only to be confronted
By an angry wife
With a gun.
The explosion of sound
Awakening her,
The horror of watching
Her nude lover
Gasp his last breath
In the bed at her side,
Then watching his killer smile
As she put the gun to her breast
And pull the trigger one last time
Had driven her,
Hysterical,
From the cabin
That had only hours before
Held such loving passion.
She wasn't cognizant
Of where she ran,
Or her own nudity.
She only knew
She had to escape
The nightmare
Her life had become.
