As this holiest of  weeks begins
I take a few minutes
To contemplate
The extreme sacrifice
Made by one man
So long ago,
A man who challenged
An empire
To look within itself
On a very personal level.
He was known
As the miracle-working
Son of God,
But I am drawn
To His humanity,
To those qualities
He shared with
The common man.
He was compassionate
Yet firm in His convictions,
He was patient
With the foibles
Of those who followed Him,
Yet He was not above
Showing His anger
With those
Who brought shame
To His Father's house.
He promised me life
If I only believed
In what He had to say,
And He promised to be with me
All my days,
And beyond.
He promised one day to return
And the signs have never seemed
More clear
That that day is near.
Jesus, my Savior,
God's beautiful Son,
My hope,
My salvation,
Look upon me, I beg,
With gentleness and mercy.
I am but a spirit
Trapped within weak flesh,
Seeking ever after Perfection
And failing miserably
Before You and the Father.
Forgive me my imperfections
And accept this tarnished,
Battered heart
That loves You so.
