Wispy dreams
Of long ago days
Fill the spaces
Of my mind
With images
Beamed as if
From a projector
Through a smoky theater,
To play against
A yellowed screen:
Young girls
Pillow-fighting
Or walking
A rugged shore,
Sharing innocent secrets
Amid the high drama
Of adolescence.
Where did they go,
Those ingenues
Who dreamt
Such fantastical dreams?
Whose lives
Once stretched before them
Like ribbons
Bright with promise?
Now at middle-age,
Miles and years
And experiences
Separate us,
But, still,
We reach out
Through telephone calls
And cyber space,
Sharing our triumphs
And tragedies,
And fondly remembering
The days of our youth,
When the world
Was our oyster
And the future
Was a pearl
For the taking.
