While cleaning out my files I found mementoes of someone I never fully appreciated until he was no longer a part of my life. This poem is for him.
Tonight seems
To be a night
For remembering
Old friends
And old loves.
So I take from my mind
The dusty box marked
"Cherished Memories"
And gently, tenderly,
Lift the lid.
The faint scent
Of Tea Rose perfume
Rises to greet me
Along with the sounds
Of laughter
And weeping
And earnest conversation
About all the things
We once held dear,
And through my mind's eye
Pass many, many images
Of you, of me, of us;
You were so handsome,
And so young,
Fighting your way free
From a constricting past
And I was, well,
I was lost,
Waiting to be found,
And you did find me,
But you didn't want
My heart,
Only my friendship,
And I couldn't be satisfied
With that.
Now, ten years have passed
Since that fateful day
When I left in bitter tears,
And O! How I regret
The squandering
Of the gift I was given.
What we shared
I've never known
With another human being.
Why couldn't I have realized
What I was throwing away
When I drove away
In the rain?

Beautifully written. It's nice to remininesce, but we can't go backwards, and must live for today.
