How many times
And in how many ways
Can we lose our innocence?
It seems
Each new generation
Must lose their own;
But for those of us
Who've survived 
The previous attacks
And the bombings
And the sheer savagery
Of our species,
New assaults
Should come
As no surprise.
Yet
We are forever stunned
When we hear
Of a new threat,
Or of a new atrocity,
Because this nation
Prefers to live  
Comforted by an 
"Out of sight,
Out of mind"
Mentality.
When will we learn
That we each
Must remain vigilent?
That we each
May be called to duty
At any moment
Right here
On the homefront?
When will we learn?
