And this is the second poem. Written later in the day, it both defines the easing of my distress and shows how my moods can drastically change in the course of a short amount of time.
Looking beyond
The pain
Of the moment,
Focusing instead
On the hope
That lies ahead,
Hope in the possibilities
That come from
Each new moment,
And each new opportunity
Born with each new breath.
I can choose to remain
Entombed within
The darkness,
Or I can reach
Ever upward
For the light
That beckons
Just beyond my reach.
I can stretch my fingers
And rise up
On my toes,
I can shout out my denial
Of defeat
And embrace each triumph
No matter how small,
For each one breathes life
Into the hope
That bore it.
