Lightening flashes,
Thunder roars,
And rain beats
A staccato drum
Upon the roof,
All in concert with
The passion swelling
Within me.
Looking in the mirror
I see the same flashes
In my eyes,
Hear the same roars
In my ears,
And feel the staccato beats
Within my heart
As I swing turbulently
Between anger
And lust,
Mindlessly frustrated
By the realities
Of being
A military wife.
Where are you
When I need you most?
Do you struggle as I do
There where you are?
Then I sigh,
Defeated once again for
Duty comes first,
That is the rule,
But that doesn't mean
I can always accept it
Gracefully.
I think the hardest thing is knowing, deep down, that he may not return from duty, or even worse, return so impaired that he no longer is the same person you married.
