My mother was a great cookie maker of multiple kinds totally unable to buy in a store or bakery shop. I would devour mass quantities from my mother's, not so artfully, hidden cookie jar coming home from school and it wouldn't ruin my appetite for the upcoming supper just an hour or two away. Unfortunately, mom suffered with diabetes for about 20 years. Like her father before.
Unwilling to take the time to bake and to cheap to buy cookies when my mother often supplied them when leaving home at 18, I stopped eating cookies.
Today, when offered a cookie, when I bite in, I find my mouth filled with sugar, flour and salt. A taste that is no longer agreeable to me. And I'm glad for that.
