Rest A While

i can promise you nothing at all
but what we might share today
would that i could vow
to turn dreams into reality
would that i could make and keep
those promises others broke
i can only give you today
or parts of it, moment by moment

my heart and understanding
are all i have to offer freely
would that it could be more....
or that it could be enough for now
it’s your choice to accept or reject
the gifts that i offer you
tokens of love and laughter
tears of mutual understanding

crawl up into my soul and rest a while
an ancient soul, wisdom hard earned
not feigned, true to who i am
accepting of who you are
my soul is large, expanded by pain
yet ready always to share joy
a soul big enough to cradle yours
so rest a little while, even if only
a short respite is all you desire
