we almost had it all didn’t we?
the whole world lay at our feet
but our shoes were too tight
and we had to just sit
and watch the world go by

the garden path illuminated
with the light of heaven
beckoned us to hold hands

and run together to smell the roses
planted by the hands of god
and watered by angels’ tears

but we were crippled with fear
and overburdened with guilt

yes, we were cowards, it's true

cowards with blistered feet
that no longer fit into such small shoes

so the roses lived out their season
faded, wilted and died

before we could feel their soft petals
caress our cheeks or inhale
their incomparable fragrance

we almost had it all, didn’t we?
but a miss is as good as a mile...

the mile we couldn’t span
because our shoes were too tight

and our hearts weren’t brave enough
to simply take them off
and run barefoot toward each other

so here’s to us, love
and what should have been

let my memory always be
a kiss from a rose
a light on your sky of gray
a warm touch on your snowy day
