We Were So Close

we were so close...so very close
to the perfection of magnificent love
but we let it slip away

yet we still have more than we did before
we broke each other’s hearts.....

the journey isn’t over, not now or ever
oh no, your travels have just begun

it’s so hard for you to walk your path

grief has crushed your heart
altered your prospective
the trail has taken a perverted twist

and you are weary, so weary

hollow, empty inside, disinterested outside
waiting for it all to end, for time to run out

your wound roars out for the healing touch
of the love you still mourn

time will make it bearable... just bearable
time will change the pain

someday when you think of me... of us
there will be no sharp knife to your heart
only a brief soul sigh, a mellow reminiscence
of all that was and is yet, good

pour out your pain on pristine pages
stain their white linen crimson with sorrow
but never say, “the journey is over”

keep walking. Sweet Love
and when you can’t walk, crawl

the journey is everlasting
lift up the lantern of understanding
on the wise man’s path

as Frost said, you have promises to keep
and miles to go before you sleep

look behind you, before and around you

i’m still there, will always be there
in your thoughts, in your heart and soul
walking close to you, with you still

just as you are with me
