Constant Temptation

the temptation is always there
to kill love
refuse to look upon its promise
to abort it while still shrouded
within a womb of darkness
before its first breath or cry
for i know it will grow up someday
and kill me
the thought undeniably recurs
to shed off a heart of flesh
and bastion myself behind
high fortress walls of resolution
for love often becomes the enemy
of peace
there are no tempered swords hard enough
to penetrate love’s impregnable armor
and no shield sturdy enough
to repel its insidious attack
it wears many cloaks and seldom
appears naked
love is that which we hold to our breast
like Cleopatra embracing the asp
admiring smoothness and beauty of its colors
while wicked fangs impale our heart
but even as it plans my funeral i cannot
deny love
Behold her there in her laces, pale and beautiful, with a touching grace. Ah, if you but knew, in truth, the reality which that beauty hides! Will name it in a word: it is the spark; and that of the woman, the sweetness of a pure heart in which you rest, the fruitful sea of milk, the eternal youthing. All this under a modest and virginal charm: holy simplicity, divine infancy!

I don't know why exactly I ran to these works when I read this poem; something reminiscently victorian about it reminded me of L'Amour.

Wow, this is powerfully penned, La Belle. But *owch*, bitten on the nip? LOL Bit painful, don't you think? We do need love, to nuture, to allow us to live. Beautiful.
For some strange reason, and it isn't necessarily the name "constant," but I relate this poemm to my short story "Constance Companion," for she was surely a temptation . . . Nice bit of writing . . .
