A Double Sonnet


Solace

I will sing to thee a comforting song
Like a mother hums to babe at her breast.
And though the path be rocky and long
God saves for last the wine that is best.
I am only a perfumed breath of love
Soft tender breeze to kiss your cheek
An echo of angel songs from above
Veiled words you have feared to speak
A book to pen your secret story in
With pages white that await your rhymes.
Grace my leaves with tales of virtue or sin
Memoirs of both good and bad times
And deep within chambers of my soul
Shall be kept forever secrets told.

And how can we know, though we try,
What is a dream and what is real?
Whether we live or whether we die
Love’s force endures eternally still.
So rest now, thy weary head at last
And listen well to the words of my song.
Let slip bitter heartaches of the past
here, not there, is where we belong.
Dream your dreams for dreams are free
And none can ever prevail to say thee nay.
Let my offered comfort true solace be
While safe here within my song you stay.
Even for the strong life passes swiftly by
No shame in love ‘nor honest tears we cry
