Ghost Ship
By La Belle Rouge

except for divinity,we are all alone
even in a crowd we exist
on a distant private island
afloat on a sea of loneliness

say it’s not so, philosopher, poet
say not that we are islands
or sprites that pass each other by
like mists navigating an inky sea

it is so.... though we fight reality
how many know our depths and heights?
whose spirit blends with ours?
what love cushions us from life’s blows?

I tell myself I will not think of you
will no longer yearn to embrace
your depths, or to warm
by the brilliance of your fire

but my thoughts are not controlled
by useless resignation
I will never hold you, except
within the citadel of my heart

I say I will shed no more tears
and then I laugh at such foolishness
for they fall too often, my tears
springing from the pain of separation

I am an island, desolate, uninhabited
devoid of the weight of love’s footprints
formed in the hot sand of my longing
you will never explore nor map my soul

I have never felt more solitary
or more devoid of hope for intimacy
I am a ghost ship, lost at sea
sailing through a night without a dawn

Your words hooked me from the beginning and didn't let go. Yes, we are alone. And sometimes so disconnected from the world that yes we sail as ships at night that has no dawn. Yes, there is a dawn. Sometimes so brief and flimsy it seems an illusion. None of us survive this world alive, but damn, why do some of us feel the agony of pain more than others? Brilliant poem. You touched me with this one, but it is just one of many that have. Liz

Sweet sorrow Belle, reminds me of an old blue's song (un-chain my heart). Ya know emotions give artistry an unfair edge; maybee if I slam my big toe with a hammer I can write like this after the swelling subsides. Next time you pass the floral shop, please buy a yellow rose and pretend it's from me; now go put it on your pillow so I can sweeten your dreams! ;( ;)

Powerfully and poetically sad, Belle. Drifting alone in the sea can sometimes be soothing and invigorating. And if you keep hope and allow the breezes to help you drift, maybe... Just maybe... another lonely soul will float by. Miracles still happen. Remember to smile.

Very stirring write that captures the sense of desolution and aloneness that often comes with a broken heart, I recently returned with Rose from taking her on an excursion to the Lunenburg Museum where the ghost ship Marie Celeste is known to sail eternally off shore.

Your poem reaches places in lonely hearts. I feel your pain, your yearnings and your sadness. Perhaps it is time for renewal and peace.
Know that you are loved by many, and this sadness will pass and happiness will be found once more.
I hear your call, just try and lift yourself you are a very special woman, and no one deserves to suffer in this way.
I send you light, love, and peace, and healing waves of energy,

Beautifully expressed as always La Belle, but there's is always a faint light glowing on the distant horizon. You just have to raise your head to see it.

Sailors sid to have seeing the Flying Dutchman sail past their ship when they were wrapped in light fog on a windless calm flat seas, to some, most of them it caused terror, to a few a sense of awe, because they knew that ghost ship was going to that island devoind of love's footprints. But you never will be alone, just feel that warm breeze caressing your skin and you will know...that's "him".
