Spending Father's Day With You

you were the first man I loved
and I’ve loved you for a lifetime
there are bonds stronger than death

you were a rock, always the same
able to dissolve all my fear
with just a smile or a wink
from your chocolate eyes

I can still so easily recall
the sound of your voice
the twinkle in your eye
the love in your hands

I remember the scent
of “Old Spice” aftershave
mixed with sunshine and
sweat from the fields

There is an indelible picture of you
in my mind, tall, broad shouldered
dressed your police uniform

you were the masculine epitome
of strength and gentleness
a friend to all, even the undeserving

you were a strong man but
I will never forget the few times
I felt so overcome when you shed tears

when my little brother died
when Mama was diagnosed with cancer
when you saw me disrespected

what would I give today
just to sit with you again
on the porch swing and talk?

so many things we’d discuss
so much advice I’d ask for
so much love we’d still share

I’d tell you how much you mean
to me then and now, forever
how grateful and proud I am to be your child

Daddy you’ve been gone so long
and yet you are ever with me
Father’s Day is always spent with you

I’m expressing my thanks and respect
sending you my love again this year,
holding you in my heart.... until we meet again
