Too Long
By La Belle Rouge

i think perhaps
i have lived too long
dreamed too many dreams
that now lie broken in darkness
at the bottom of a well with no water

i’ve seen too much
i never wanted to look at
those things i have desired
turned to dust on the winds of time
too far behind me to reach for again

i have given until
my heart is an empty shell
aching for something to fill it at last
knowing the emptiness will remain until
ashes ride a breeze over a wild high place

i think perhaps
i have lived much too long
i’ve seen the raw ravages of war
known the hopelessness of poverty
held windfall riches with a loose hand

for like the ashes of a life
they fly away to an unknown realm
where sad hearts can’t seem to journey
if it had been my choice i would have spread
my wings and flown before i had lived too long

No you've not lived too long. With words flowing as yours do, you may outlive us all.

God bless,

I think we all travel here every now and then Belle, that is with the disappointments and tradegies of life. And as poets we can beat the words in this direction, very super verse in relation. loveBwithU

"...over a wide high place", hit me immediately...powerfully put...yet, you and I know, only the good die young! LOL!
Loved it!
I want my ashes spread over some wide high place, but just the thought of being incinerated gives me the willies, and being dropped in flesh from a plane won't work???I hate blood and guts!
I have time to sort it out, I'm sure HA!
Love and Peace~

I think when the time come for us to go home, we would all spread our wings. Life is just a journey, we struggle, we fight, we win some, and we lose some. Some are never satisfied; and yet some just can call it quit. It takes all walks of life to know the meaning of being here on earth. If we can choose our time to spread our wings, I'll choose mine to spread anytime.

Happy New Year to you, Belle!!!

such empathy and world-weary fatigue, darlin Belle. A good setting for year-end and the desire for hibernation. Yet you are an earthy soul whose spirit will rise with the sap just as soon as. Your soulful beauty of spirit shines even within lines so seemingly sorrow-filled. May the new year dawn brightly for you, with fresh winds of inspiration and hopefulness to fill your sails. Love always, Kate xx

The history of violence and suffering is "Too Long". To survive we seek bubbles of peace in the mist of the insanity. That bubble usually means a close and loving family.

Loved this, a real classical feel to go with the Pre-Raphelite's fascination with such things, Burne-Jones would've been proud :) Blessing for a Happy New Year-Michelle

This is sad and beautiful, and deeply emotional of reflected past regrets and a longing for what was, and is no more. Very deep write, Lady LaBelle.

Belle, It is always a pleasure to read your work, including this highly emotional write. The last verse is my favorite, becaus it carries so much truth.
"for like the ashes of a life
they fly away to an unknown realm
where sad hearts can’t seem to journey
if it had been my choice i would have spread
my wings and flown before i had lived too long"

May 2009 bring you peace and joy.
Cheers,
Dan

This a deep poem, striking at the inner working of the human soul. Yet what came across to me most vividly is the fact that the saying is true, "You can't take it with you."
I often find it sad that we struggle and suffer so much over "things."
Things that can never make us truly happy and in the end, things that will fade with the passage of time. And how much cruelty does humanity expend over the persuit of these things. In the end it means very little. In the end all that should matter is those that we have loved, and those that loved us in return.

Beautiful work, as always,
Mark

Haunting memories filled long ago, reaching a plateau in search of where to go from here. Destiny is always in one's hands, but I must admit it leaves me to give pause....

Be always safe,

This writing is so beautiful, even in its sadness. It is a classical writing that can withstand the test of time, and with the beautiful artwork, it simply leaves an indelible print upon my heart. Thank you for sharing; your talent/skill is rare. hugs, lindalaw

Belle, such sadness and desolation in this piece. Nothing is ever so bad that we cannot pick ourselves up and start fresh. The Universe will not allow us to fail. You are a light force and you must always remember that your pen is your companion and your voice.

This is a very profound and well written piece.
Much love, light and peace to you sweet Belle,
