Twisted Trail
By La Belle Rouge

The trail of tears seems endless
As through shadowlands it winds
A tender soul left defenseless
To dark ravages of time
The trail of tears in Winter
When snows of sorrow drift
Lodged in a heart, pain’s splinter
No way heavy burdens to lift
Strong bars are never broken
The prisoner longs to be freed
And faith is a well worn token
To placate the aching need
Butterfly’s fragile wings are torn
Fighting night to fly toward morn

Love given freely for love’s own sake
Too innocent to count the cost
Love given to those who only take
And leave for the lover the loss
Endless enduring of emptiness
As twisted trail winds on and on
Fleeting moments of briefest bliss
Then hope, taking flight, is gone
Worn platitudes are pointless
If the same trail isn’t walked
On cripple legs broken and joint-less
Cheerful lecture is just empty talk
Trail Of Tears do you have an end
Where sorrow ceases and joy begins?

Belle, I admire (envy) your gifted skill with the sonnet.
The trail may be twisted but your sonnet goes straight to
the heart. -gene.

LaBelle,
Moving, strong and deep, you took me along a great reflective path and I'm much the wiser and better for it.

a trail of tears often lead to a river of sorrow unless one can see the sunshine reflecting on the surface of its joy ...

Sadness Cloud would come to Solitude teepee where Tear's dormant after looking for Path's direction and finding none.
Squaw tongue shouldn't talk to Pain or to Burden, they are bad medicine, but ask Father Winter to let Spring to come out.
Also, Squaw feet should no walk on Tear's tracks, better wait for Bliss.

The Trail of Tears has always been a very sad one for all who have ventured down it.

The Trail of Tears takes on a deeper, more personal level, reading these lines - you take us there, La Belle, and make us see. Well done.
