Mea Culpa
By La Belle Rouge

I was born, mea culpa?
and was my sin so great
unwise youthful naivety
deserving of life sentence?

if I should cry mea culpa
this day and forevermore
would mercy unlock the door?

if suddenly dark shadows
gave way to sun’s light
would frightened child
run back into the night?

blinded by freedom’s dawn
knowing not how to be…free
mea culpa, surely it must be

quiet desperation, unspoken
the fault seems laid on me
surely mea culpa, mea culpa
the love between me and thee

A harsh and worthy testiment to those without compassion, especially for the youthful, growing mind. Beautiful and thoughtful words, Belle!

The heart aching pulsating "mea culpa" cried by the innocent receiving yet more undeserved lashes.
Sit on his lap, let his arms around you form a nest where the little bird will feel warmth and safe.

I find your poem very compelling and soul-reaching, Belle. I am reminded of a poem that I have posted here at AD entitled, "Absolution." I used the phrase "mea culpa" in it. Your verses "struck a chord" with me. Thank you. Love and best wishes,

Regis

Lovely work, Belle. Deep and thoughtful; searching and searing. It seems many of us were born with the said Jonah Complex... my mother never stopped telling me why!!!!!!! So, yes, everything is ALWAYS my fault. But, darlin, those who know they are in dire need of mercy are perhaps also those who are always quick to dispense it? "Sorry" and "I love you" are always the most difficult words to say... and are, of course, a perfect marriage in themselves, ensuring an extra-special bond of both vulnerability and trust. Very strong and penetrating writing as per u. xx

Very soul stirring...we are if we are to believe the words of some born with sin, so if that is so we are born only to repent. I think and believe that a child is born innocent and should be treated that way and nourished through life unafraid of demons and devils.

"if suddenly dark shadows / gave way to sun’s light / would frightened child / run back into the night?"

Love this poem. A lot of underlying, layered meanings within its framework I believe. That quote about? Very telling.
