One Flower
By La Belle Rouge

if only
there was a bit of fertile ground
it didn’t have to be an acre
just a spot, big enough to nourish
one flower

if only
a reticent sun would shine on her
it didn’t have to be a firestorm
just warmth enough to grow roots of
one flower

if only
the life-giving rain would fall
it didn’t have to be a flood
just an occasional shower to water
one flower

there was
a fleeting spring and summer
she spent both searching
for a way to bloom where she
was planted

and then
one autumn morning she saw
colorful, radiant, blooming
through a tiny crack in solid rock
one flower

face upturned
toward inhospitable gray sky
roots clinging to life below surface
nourished in hidden fissures of
her soul

and when
wilted it ends
no one will know
the courage it took
for one flower to grow

I ache for this poem, Belle. I have felt and seen every single word and emotion within it. It's a stand-alone poem that should be published - and often. Its message is both heartwarming and devastating. Strength and meekness beautifully combined in one powerful pen. Totally love this, thank you. Kate xx

LaBelle,
This is a beautifully conceived and wonderfully written poem, so focused, determined and strong, and what an aftertaste it has!

Some people are like that flower, born from a cold rock fissure and clinging to existence for dire life, showing to whoever made it happens that it was stronger than "fate's" malice.

There was a song written back in the fifties about a Rose in Spanish Harlem and this poem reminded me of that song, it is such a striking picture and the poem does it justice...a symbol of what we can be if we really want to be...

Yes, indeed it does take courage for the fulfillment of a flower, no matter where you find them. Courage. Yes.
