Who Were You Erica?
By La Belle Rouge

a solitary wooden cross keeps watch
over the roadside where you died
passing it so often I wonder..
who were you Erica?

only eighteen years, so few years
no time to really find yourself
and then you were gone
only a woman-child

were you ever in love, brokenhearted?
did you dance in the spring rain?
were you loved, Sweet Girl?
were you happy?

someone loved, missed you, enough to
place red flowers in remembrance
now fake flowers are faded by
five years of sun and snow

who were you Erica? are you forgotten
as if eighteen years have vanished?
or is it too painful for those who
love you to visit here?

each time I pass that wooden cross
I pray, “God bless those who
loved Erica and planted
her memory here"

Time passes and yet her name it can't delete, not if a poet soul keeps the flame of the memory alive!

Oh how painfully sad this is, so young, too young in a split second gone forever. We have a few crosses here, they are all painted white and it really catches one's attention every time we pass by. Another life lost, what would they have become, but God called them all home...

Be always safe,
Karen

It is always so sad when life is robbed from youth and leaves only memories and tears in it's place.

LaBelle,
This is the writing of a poet with a great and deep heart and a caring soul; the evocations are so right, just so right.

This beautifully written poem yet so sad,
composed with heartfelt compassion
is a very creative write concerning a subject
no one ever seemed to talk about until you
brought it up to light making your readers think.......

I must say I never wondered of those poor souls the crosses
by the side of the road represented, now you have opened that door
to the consciousness of those driving by.....

I will never again look at roadside crosses the same
with disregard of those who lost their life and why....
Love & Peace be with you

William

Planted by the side of the road like a seed.
Love bloomed here today.
We can wonder together about angels.

Yeah, so many of these crosses dot America's landscape. Usually the loss of life can be directly attributed to driving while drunk.

Truly heartfelt, La Belle. And besides those who place those flowers, you honor her well.
