death is not a percipice
to be feared
near death, near the unknown
in proximity to the rudimentary
stark cliffs that rise above
a turbulent sea?
blind leap into the arms of eternity?
I won’t have to be pushed
for I’ve waded slowly from
that mysterious shore
sinking gradually into the water
where darkness enveloped me
like a thick security blanket
carried by warm undercurrents
of life’s river, becoming one
with its swirling eddies
accepted, embraced, absorbed
by the universe
waking once again
outside the restricting windows
risen above city lights
watching then as one devoid
of any aspiration to return
to an earthbound existence
where fear is exaggerated
and death deemed an enemy
death is not a foreign scream
but a familiar whisper
death is only a door
opening into the original reality
Belle, you give call to the welcoming of "the opening door into original reality" -- there is calm and total resolve in your poem -- when "the door opens", you will welcome the entry -- very moving my friend -- may peace and love be yours -- Jon Michael
This is one very beautiful, reflective piece. Yes, near death experiences one must fight until leaving it on the other side of the door. Brilliant and very reflective...
"I won't have to be pushed" lies at the heart of this poem, is the summation of its tone and attitude...and "death is not a foreign scream but a familiar whisper"...how well you rise above and conquer fear, Belle!
On Yeats' headstone in Drumcliffe is written the epitaph he wrote for himself: 'cast a cold eye on life on death, horseman pass by'...
and here I read and pass by in respect.
I like to think death is just a doorway to greater things. Because I my age I know it is close by. But being a big chicken I am tired of suffering with illness. Why can't we just go to sleep and meet our makwer? This poem as usual from a great writer as yourself was flawless!
Once, on a trip to Mallorca, I was standing at the top of a three hundred feet vertical fall looking down at the ragged rocks battered by the sea and asked myself, "is there an ever after? and if so...what's there for me?" Then, I walked away thinking that maybe the day after I would know. I didn't.

Well, for one I am not waiting for it with open arms. I do agree that death is much better than many ways we find ourselves having to live when we are old and not in complete control of ourselves. Yes indeed.
So gentle and alluring, alluding to what, as Amber says, many of us have some measure of experience in its various shapes and forms. Like a Big Sleep, the hermetic effect of your thoughts and words is persuasive and soothing, dulling the sharp nick of life's edges and calling us to Home. As ever, you stimulate and calm the emotions equally, creating dynamic tension. Lovely work, Belle. x
Belle, sometimes I still can hear those "Death's Whispers". I love this title it implies life. I as many on this site have experienced some of what you have written. It is chosen that it be just an experience perhaps to enlighten not only our selves but others.
Wonderful poetry and personally deeply felt within.
Join me as we travel together on the road called "Aging." I will be sharing my personal experiences with you and offer ideas on how we can better navigate the complex byways of our older years. Grief, healing, generations, ancestors, and more.

I Love this line and all it means. . .Death is merely the door that leads us Home.
