First Snow
By La Belle Rouge

the first snow fell on the mountains
kissing their pinnacles with frosty lips
wrapping pines in a plush, white fur coat

like lingering cardinals, it surprised us
for we had not expected Winter so soon
surely there must still be another week
of Indian Summer left in time’s scheme

but no, the first snow fell on the hills
silently drifting on howling winter winds
covering brittle, brown, rotting leaves
in a camouflage blanket of pristine purity

we bemoaned the lost years, tasted the
bitterness of sorrow on thirsty tongues
wished we could have been as untainted
as the flakes that melted on our eyelids

we shivered…. Summer had disappeared
in blinding blizzard of cold, quiet regret
time was never on our side, My Darling
time nor seasons cared for our desires

now the first snow has fallen already
and what is left to me but welcome sleep
"to sleep, perchance to dream".... of you

I know I over-use the word, but this is so Beautiful! After reading the first 4 stanzas, the next revealed a deeper meaning. I had to go back and read the rest again with new awareness. Good writing!

Belle, an analogy so perfectly conceived with the snow as the usher of self appraisal and messenger of time and fate -- it is akin to a purification ritual, our observation and laments falling with the flakes of the first snow -- I bid you joy, love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael

That first snow always seemed to offer a temporary beauty,,,, like a fresh coat of makeup for Mother Nature, but alas the makeup of Spring offers so much more.... New beginnings, more color and promises of so much more yet to come.

Enjoyed this Belle, not much snow here on The Treasure Coast.

Thanks. Dick

I WOULD GUESS THAT...THE 'FIRST SNOW'...THAT FIRST 'WINTER'...IS THE HARDEST. AND ONE DOES YEARN TO 'SLEEP', FOR IT DULLS THE CHILL AND PAIN OF THE COLD AND GIVES ONE THE CHANCE TO PERHAPS 'DREAM'...OF SEASONS PAST...WHICH WERE SO MUCH 'WARMER'. SUCH A GREAT METAPHOR...DONE SO WELL AND ENJOYED. THANKS, POETESS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS & FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Fine delivery, Belle,
and not only does it evoke memories
for me but you make it close and personal
and with great purity of thought.

Such a gentle and all-pervading timelessness comes through these beautiful stanzas, Belle. A sense of permanence of longing and sentiment, and impermanence in the temporal way of all things as marked by the fleeting yet relentless seasons. Sleep well 'neath your soft coverlet of sweetly-scented dreams... xx

The first sign of winter brings sweet regrets. Time to bundle up in front of the fire and reminisce. Your emotion comes through in this one as clear as a bell.

Ah, it is that time, though. Except down here in the swamp. It has been in the eighties for a week of more, and we don't have mountains to get a glimpse of snow. Great poetry.
