I Love My Dog
By La Belle Rouge

it’s not any major crisis that undoes me
financial loss, illness, betrayal….death
I can handle those with strength
but it’s the daily, nagging same old
crap life dishes out over and over
that knocks my spirit down into
the dust of explosive frustration
and makes me want to stand out
in an open field far from civilization
and scream until I have no voice left

I had a bumper sticker once that said,
“The more people I know, the more
I love my dog,” I need another one of those
one person told me she was insulted
by my brutally honest bumper sticker
she was one of the reasons I had it
dogs don’t pretend to love you then bite you
they usually make hostile intentions plain
dogs don’t talk about you behind your back
most don’t bite you while you’re feeding them

dogs just are who and what they are
with tails wagging and sloppy tongue kisses
or ears pinned back and threatening snarls
with a dog you pretty much know what
to expect; when to pet them or run from them
or maybe just avoid them and their teeth
people... now they are a whole different animal
you never know what to expect from some people
they kiss you one minute and stab you the next
oh yeah, I miss that bumper sticker

Besides all the other differences between Yankees and Southerners,
I prefer Yankees because if they don't like you, you know it. But a sweet Southerner will smile to your face and make you think they like you....then stab you in the back.
I like my dog better than some people too.

I still run into people like you mentioned and I had a dog but, had to put to sleep....enjoyed as always.

Always,

Most of the human race live within a hypnotic trance. Layers of authority cover their inner voice and truth is muffled behind excuses and frustrations.Dogs, animals and nature are truth. They are the essence of true love; love resides in each blade of grass... You are an incredibly loving being and a precious treasure. A truthful write.

With respect and admiration,

I feel ya! So many times... I've wished I was a dog - pampered and loved upon, not a care in the world.

Your bumper sticker resonates your poem very well.
Backstabbing people are cruel!

Well, your moods are not always about romance, are they? :)
Loved it!

If I could only be half as good as my dogs, I'd be a much better man.

I don't know, hon, I think Rufuz used to write poems behind my back that were not too nice speaking of me...LOL...but like you, I love doggies and wish, for myself I could have another, just cannot really afford to support one at this juncture in life...maybe someday...that little dog in the picture does not look to be a happy fellow, unless that is a smile of sorts...-e-

By coincidence, I wrote about dogs today as well, but I wasn't as kind as you are towards the lovable creatures.

Not your usual fare, but I like it when you step out from Romanticism and lay it on like it is as in this poem… Arf…arf…

So, if you screamed where you can't be heard, would that mean you're making any sound?

Hard hitting rant from a fiery Red.

So true. Dogs and other animals can give you unconditional love.
I always wanted a bumper sticker that said: You are now keeping up with the Schafer's.

Absolutely! I am a confirmed dog lover. I have had them throughout my life, and have one now curled up on the sofa beside me where I sit at the computer. Dogs are for real. Unconditional love.

If only people were as open and honest! I sense more than a bit of frustration here Belle. Find that field and go yell until it's all gone. It will get the taste of those hostile back biters out of your mind. Jon Michael
