The True Story Of Bell Boyd Famous Confederate Civil War Spy. She was reportedly not beautiful but very attractive, feminine, charming and intelligent.
La Belle Rebelle
I am indebted for some very remarkable effusions, some withered flowers, and a great deal of important information."
* Belle Boyd
They tried to imprison me often, maybe even hang me
once because I shot and killed that damn yankee.
He was screaming obscenities at my mother.
Our men had gone to fight northern aggression,
we Southern ladies had to defend ourselves;
so I did.
They dropped the case and freed me in short time.
I vowed to myself to make the most of my assets
and to fight my own war against the blue bellies.
Being nice was my greatest weapon and being
nice back was those yankee officers worst mistake;
It backfired.
I effectively overheard everything from battle plans
to troop maneuvers along with all the social gossip.
I hid in closets, listened through keyholes and
passed all I had heard on to Confederate officers.
Why, those fool Yankees gave me flowers, candy
and enough information to win the war!
Once I rode though battle lines to bring a message
to our General Stonewall Jackson at Winchester,
through enemy fire so heavy it left bullet holes in my skirt
I would gladly have given my life for Virginia and Dixie.
I made it though, and lived to spy again for the South.
I was a bold woman.
I had used whatever means at my disposal to aid my country,
deceit, flirtation, eavesdropping, romantic entanglement.
Yankees hated me but they had to respect my cunning and courage.
I was Siren of Shenandoah, Amazon of Secession, Rebel Joan of Arc
and the newspapers in France gave me the honorable title of
La Belle Rebelle.
Mystery and intrigue shuffled and weaved by an astute lady of the south. Thanks for the reminder of Belle Boyd's wild and adventurous life. She was truly a woman of conviction to her southern heritage.
Thank you for revealing your mentor and source of your pseudonym. She was quite a woman. I can see why good looks were not necessary considering what she was dealing with.
I was fortunate enough to visit Jackson's Mill. Stonewall Jackson's birthplace, several times. It was a West Virginia State Park and conference center. I often stopped on journeys in the evening to take part in the family-style meal that was served. Southern hospitality at its best.
A wonderful share. Intriguing historic tale,
Southern La Belle Rebelle.
