My mother paid her to take care of me but she loved me for free.

Poem Artwork

Lizzy Was Love

I was a lily white little baby girl
a thirsty sponge.... like all babies are
ready to absorb the world around me
I can still remember her dark face
and her deep-throated laugh
the way her plump arms gathered me
into the center of magical, warm hugs
the sound of lullabies she sang to me

if she didn't love me like a mother
I never knew it, to me Lizzy was love
while my mother was away at work
Lizzie rubbed camphor oil on my gums
and rocked me to sleep when I teethed
it was she who encouraged my first steps
caught me when I fell, wiped my tears
Lizzie was a good woman, beautiful woman

I never thought about her skin color
I just knew that when the red-gold curls
of my tiny head rested on her ample bosom
I was safe, loved and all was right in my world
she took my bottle away and gave me a cup
I thought her heartless and hated her
but soon forgot my hate surrounded by her love
Lizzy was black and beautiful, Lizzy was love

I loved her and because of her,
color has never mattered to me

Love has no barriers. When the heart is filled with rightful compassion for another it looks through the soul, not our eyes. I fine tribute to Lizzy.

THIS IS WAS SO ENJOYED. YEAH, IT'S THE MEMORIES OF A CHILD HOOD THAT SHAPED US...THAT LAID THE FOUNDATION OF OUR FIRST STEPS OF LEARNING AND DEVELOPING. YOU SEEMED TO HAVE HAD A FANTASTIC CHILDHOOD(I JUST READ THE STORY ABOUT YOUR MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER) AND, LIKE I ALWAYS DO WHEN I READ THIS AND OTHER BEAUTIFUL BEGINNINGS, I MISS NOT HAVING THEM. THANK GOD FOR JESUS...HIS LOVE 'HAD TO' MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE FOR ME AND IT DID. IS THAT AN ACTUAL PHOTO OF LIZZY? WHETHER IT IS OR NOT - IT COMPLIMENTS THIS POEM WELL. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I certainly hope that there was someone to help care for Lizzy when she reached old age.

As I read, I was so reminded of my caregiver for the past 12 years, Daisey Ashley, owner of Ashley's Maid Service who has moved from cleaning houses to caring for the elderly and disabled in her later years. She will retire soon and move to her family's land in beautiful lake country.

How can we judge anyone when there is so much love in all of us, if we but free it.

What a wonderful, heartwarming story. And I love what you posted above the picture: "My mother paid her to take care of me but she loved me for free." It doesn't get any better than that. In my opinion you are one of the best writers on AD. I'm always excited to read everything you've written.
