It was a cold, dark Christmas Eve
And the shoppers had all gone home
He wiped the hot tears on his sleeve
As he sat on the park bench alone
Reveries flooding of those years gone by
Sacred years he never appreciated
He remembered how he made her cry
He knew her love he had desecrated
He was young once and so was she
She appeared as on their wedding day
All his abuse he never could see
Not even when she went away
He could smell her sweet perfume
Like fairest gardenias in bloom
He thought of that pink negligee
She wore on their wedding night
The way with their children she'd play
How she'd make everything seem right
Her silky, long, dark, flowing hair
Her smooth, soft, porcelain skin
How he wished that she was there
And he could hold her just once again
But she was gone far away forever
He had failed her too many times
No more Christmas Eves with her ever
He's left alone with riddles and rhymes
He killed her love and feels no contrition
Silently she passes by, a Christmas apparition
We have missed your poetic wizardry, but I see you haven't lost your touch. Yes, as the years pass by and things don't go the way we thought, we start to think about what we did and said that led to loves that are now more than apparitions.
How sad when we don't appreciate someone that we love until it is too late. You express the emotions of his heart quite well. Thanks for sharing this lovely seasonal poem. Have a great day Ma Belle Fille.
A touching poetic story with a somber ending. Yes, we want warmth and love all year round but especially this time of year. Merry Christmas to you too!
