We worry about cold fronts this time of the year, but when they bring snow, little children always cheer.

Arctic Express (Children)

Just in time for Christmas,
not one hour too late,
the Arctic Express,
arrived at the Lower 48.

From San Diego to Miami,
McAllen and New Orleans,
cold snapped its fingers,
and nipped the ears' lobes.

Snow was falling in Laredo,
and in Mobile, too,
hadn't seen snow like that,
in Galveston, since 1902.

The children were delighted,
bundling up while still inside,
headed for the nearest hillside,
cardboard box for to slide.

All across the US South,
fireplaces were now burning.
Leaving children everywhere,
wondering if Santa needed warning?

There were snowball fights,
and snowmen everywhere you looked.
Skating on the Bayou required only shoes,
slipping and falling just to amuse.

Cold, tired and happy,
rosy cheeked children came on in,
after warm milk and cookies,
to sleep the dreams of when.

Candy castles covered the land,
princes and princesses to delight,
filling the heads of sleepy ones,
all through the long cold night.

Awakening to find Santa,
had arrived on the scene,
bringing little boys and girls,
what they only had dreamed.

A very white Christmas,
across the entire land,
the Arctic Express was more,
much better than anything planned.

Children, Cold tired and happy. What can beat happiness, neither good nor bad weather?

This touches the child's heart in every adult who has ever seen, felt, experienced snow, especially as a child with the skating, the sledding, the snow men and all. Simply wonderful, a memory made fresh, like fresh snow. John

Your lively poem brought out the child in me. And, viewing the first snowfall of the season never grows old for the possibilities of fun.

A white Christmas masterpiece, beautifully written. Young and old alike can relate to this poem. Now if there was only a snow day for school.

This is supposed to be for children . . . I maintain that I am a child at heart, so I feel obliged to read this . . .

Ahhh . . . This is a masterful write, Ron. You captured the essence of children during this time of the year. Yep, I skated with shoes on a pond not far from where I lived until it was finally too cold for me and to the house I ran. Thank you for this poem, it brought back those carefree days.

More good memories churned up with this gem, Ron. We had a hill in our backyard when I was growing up and we lined it with cardboard boxes, then sat on wax paper and slid down. That way we could go sledding year round. I love living in Florida and my arthritis is most grateful not to have to contend with the ice, cold and snow anymore. However, on chilly mornings we still enjoy sitting out on our lanai with our coffee around the fire pit. Thanks for the lovely little poem. Gypsy

You've written a poem that any adult can identify with, hearkening back to their own experience of the winter cold and snow. You've covered a number of key images of such an experience, and for that, I'm grateful. Seems we get so caught up in trying to be worthy adults, we can easily forget the formative years your poem addresses. Very worthwhile write.
