Looking Into A Casket

When you look into a casket
you may remember the pain
they caused you, the many tears
you may, yes, you probably will

you will remember a first kiss
a wedding day you were too
young and not ready for and
the last night you were a virgin

you'll remember the first time
you held babies created together
the grandchildren, apples of eyes
you'll remember chaos and crisis

reveries of cold and hunger
not knowing how long you'll have
a roof over your head or be able
to feed your young children

you'll touch cold, work-rough hands
wish things could have been different
knowing they were who they were
and it never could have been better

you will wonder where they are now
are they at peace, happy at last?
you'll think about the last time
you talked to them, harsh words

you'll contemplate the last time
they told you they loved you
then drove a stake deeply into
your heart, the very next minute

you'll grieve, for them, for you
for your children who've lost a parent
and persist in hating the other one
you'll grieve, though no one cares

you'll whisper, “I'm so, so sorry
this happened to you, too soon
I hope we meet again somewhere
beyond all the estrangement and pain”

it will hurt knowing they won't
relish the sunlight of this spring day
you hope they're enjoying a new life
doing what makes them happy

and you'll cry, yes, you will cry
from the depths of your soul
remembering the good and bad
when you look into a casket

We have all gone through the ups and downs in our lives with our spouses. I remember the good times as well as the bad, and I always have been proud of how we had dealt with the problems in the best way we knew how.

Our children will have their own lives to live, I used to worry about them (I still do, but not as much as I once did), but now I have come to the conclusion that they will learn about life and the problems solving like the way and husband and I did in the best way they'll know-how. God is with them and will guide them through life.

A very intriguing and heartfelt poem!

Your poem seems to be reflecting the story of your life, filled with hardship and tragedy. Some regrets about those you have viewed in caskets for the last time before they are buried and out of sight forever in the ground.

I did not see my mother or any other member of my family that died recently. If I had seen her, only fond memories of what a good mother she was would cross my mind. Regretting that while we talked on the phone the last time I saw her was 2011 and she cried when I left saying, "I will never see you again."

Others that I viewed included a guy from work who never hesitated to help me. He retired young and happy, only to drown trying to save a fishing companion. A university president who at the peak of his career was caught at a railroad crossing and killed by a train. And, another coworker who had spinal atrophy and I consoled her many times as she got worse. Like my mother, her death was a blessing from all of the pain.

Dearest La Belle,
this truly touched me. You see Frank and I broke up 42 years ago and I had not heard from him. I thought about him almost every month ever since. It was a very painful breakup in which he decided to part ways. We were 16 and 18 years old. Last month I had a dream in which he seemed he really was present in my vision. The interpretation from God I got was he was gathering spiritual insight and extremely free, joyous as an eagle in flight. I woke and was deeply touched. I searched on the internet to see he had indeed passed away. I read his obituary and was at peace he had a child and was married 18 years and lived in Capon Bridge West Virginia near Winchester. He had become a mechanic and loved to fish.
I shed tears and all the emotions finally came that were never expressed. The next week I had a dream again about Frank and he came to see how I was... I have had similar dreams of loved ones. They come first to let you know they have indeed passed through the valley and they are indeed free and extremely happy with all weight gone.... They usually come twice, sometimes three times... Thank you again for this moving piece.

Very touching Susan. Anger, frustration, love, sadness, etc..... so many emotions flood through us in those moments. Truth be told, I've only been to one funeral in my entire life where there was a casket. All the rest were cremated. That one funeral was my grandfathers, and I was five years old. I can close my eyes to this day and still see every detail of that service. Thank you for sharing such an honestly felt piece. Kudos. rlc
