I grew up in a little place, tobacco fields
and ancient curing barns, so picturesque,
their tin roofs sagging and walls leaning
those log barns must have been built
long before my great grandparents' time
if you didn't work the fields, you worked
the looms of the equally old cotton mill
a few miles away in the mill-town
my little place had one stop sign,
a general store, a school, a post office
a church and an old but growing cemetery
everything centered around church
all of life was influenced by the church
tee-totaling, sin shunning Southern Baptist
that's where I learned the old hymns
I remember their tunes, can sing their lyrics
even now, in old age, odd, such remembrances
it was there my foundation was built
and my poetry was conceived and born
in the woods, old buildings, ancient hills
I took my strength from summer nights
cricket sound and lightning bugs' flight
autumn days rich with color and scent of fire
meadow grass beneath frost or heavy snow
I grew up under spreading oaks and maples
the old porch swing, knew my grandparents
my parents, my sister, my cousins.... and me
My Love and I spent summer hours there
and it was there I softly sang lullabies
to blue eyed baby boys, watching them sleep
that little place will always be who I am
often I find my thoughts and my poetry
surrounded by old times and departed souls
where pain and sorrow were overcome by love
INDEED, POETESS. LOVELY WILD FLOWERS GROW IN PLACES LIKE THAT AND YOU ARE DEFINITELY ONE OF THEM. YOUR FRAGRANCE IS GOD GIVEN AND STRONG. I MET YOU HERE WHEN I MOVED INTO THE DEN AND I AM GLAD ABOUT THAT. THIS IS ANOTHER KEEPER, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS
What a beautiful painting you have painted with your words! Ah! "the "blue eyed baby boys........." captured my heart! Thank you for this beautiful offering!!
Enjoyed this biographic insight, Susan. I was born in Chicago. Because my father was a carpenter, our family never enjoyed stability in the early years. Every time he got a new job, we moved to be in proximity to it. By the time I was 11, and we were on our way to San Diego, my family had already moved 9 times. Thanx 4 sharing. Peace.... rlc
Oh my! Such lovely words you have written. They poured from your heart to my very soul. I can echo the words of another, that is, never stop writing. Even here in “Little Place” I wanted you to continue on and on, serenading the readers with the song about your special “Little Place.” I don’t know when, or if, anyone has ever captured the feeling that flows through my heart such as this beauty. Every word, phrase, and sentence strikes a chord with my being. Thank you, dear heart, for this fine pieced of art.
A story of the past, told poetically, with images that let us visualize it and feel it without ever having been there. Those of us of a certain age may have similar stories to tell in different settings, but everyone's story is unique. We need these stories to help us understand the present and plan for the future.
Wow. I truly felt I knew this place even though I have never been more south than the Maine border. You brought it alive and let us feel so much of your emotional attachment to that place and your life. Thank you for sharing such a big part of yourself.

This is not a drill. The attack on Pearl. They were the ghost planes of the night, deadly, illusive, sharp-clawed Black Cats. The Memoirs of ARM H.P. Lawrence, a Pearl Harbor survivor, Black Cat, and decorated war veteran.
Love ya!
