 A Walk With Death

some may say it's an obsession

it is only a familial connection

I have walked with dreaded death

since the day I was gifted with life

balancing on the cusp of a canyon

I've heard his footfalls behind me

I disappointed everyone by living

more than six months or a year

yet he is never too far in the distance

his shadow falls across my shoulder

his breath blows cold on my neck

it's only Death, the last enemy

perhaps the last friend.....perhaps

when time is closing in on us

we race into the next existence

to be freed of distressing memories

entering the joy of a new life

Smokes, so honest and deep poem about living with death close by. It feels both sad and peaceful there’s a sense of acceptance that turns fear into quiet understanding.
I was only thinking last night that I hope those who owe you life have returned in gratitude for such a beautiful lady.

My niece was premature and told there were many things she should never do. So far she’s done them all and has lived an amazing life. She lucky so far. I think that shadow over the shoulder is so very relatable , I really liked this one.

You hit his sister, awesome. Never stop writing. God bless you. I hope to see you in paradise?

Death is usually a dark and forbidding thought for most of us, but I, for one, see it more akin to your characterization—friend, enemy, imminent, or distant, et al.

The next existence if an endless array of possibilities for most. I often think and write on this subject. Thanks for posting.

A very interesting take on death. It is not easy to write about death and sometimes readers don't like it. I know from experience. Whenever I write about death, people are wondering if I am dying. Well done.

While I don't subscribe to the last line with any probable validity, I certainly felt the emotion of the poem.

I guess I have been what people call blessed, not to have death chasing me throughout my life. Even though I engaged in behavior that was often very dangerous without a safety net.
