Another bash at a villanelle. Slightly more successful on a technical level, I think.

Poem Artwork

Villanelle for a Cat that Sat

The cat that sat upon the mat
Now stands and gives a purr,
Then goes outside to catch a rat.

The little boy pulls off his hat
And chases with his cur
The cat that sat upon the mat,

Who hides away inside the hat
And preens upon a burr,
Then goes outside to catch a rat.

The girl who knows just where it’s at
Runs fingers through its fur –
The cat that sat upon the mat.

She gives its head a gentle pat,
The cat looks back at her
Then goes outside to catch a rat.

When all’s at peace within the flat
Girl leaves without demur
The cat that sat upon the mat,
Then goes outside to catch a rat.

oh, oh, oh... I am SO confused! I thought that villanelle's were written as 10 syllable lines. Or... did someone just tell me that to try and trick me? Charlie????
Now I have to go and do some more studying. All these poem forms make my head have to think.
(oops... I probably ought to read the poem instead of just counting syllables, huh?... but it is about a cat and I don't like cats so maybe just counting the syllables will have to do until I am more educated on villanelles.)

Art meets cadence and this "Villanelle to Catch a Rat (TOLT)" shines.

Very cute! Nicely done. But I have to say, that switching verb order in poetry has always bothered me. Why do we do that? Okay, I know I'm a bit of a "grammar queen", but why not say "hides away" instead of "away hides" -- you did it just to bug people like me, didn't you...? Hmmm? --Charlie
