Poem Artwork

The music danced into the city
on the keys of a Cajun accordion,
accompanied by the rhythm of a culture
accustomed to overcoming tragedy.

It floated in on the humid exhalations
of a rusty saxophone that somehow
survived the latest storm and ensuing flood,
ready to get on with the hurricane blues.

It boldly marched in on a thumping drum line,
celebrating the miraculous comeback
of a city that had been knocked unconscious
but refused to be counted out.

It flowed back into town on a river of hope,
a delectable gumbo of exotic flavors
from many different nations and peoples;
pulsing invitations from open doors ...

This is what I loved the most about New Orleans,
the songs that enticed, beckoned, stirred my blood.
Let the music play so we can end this dirge
and second line down St. Charles Avenue.

(c) 2005, Karla Dorman.

Irrepressible, Karla - just love the pic! Surely, the Spirit of the place will be revived and there will be a Second Coming as far as New Orleans is concerned - but I can wait just as long as it takes for it to be a genuine revival in practical terms, like Sherry sensibly suggests - but, as far as the human spirit goes, there is a NEED to mourn, sure, but also a need for the resurgence of hope which will energise the minds and stir the wills for action! A wonderful rallying call, this! TY Kate xx

Lady K,

It is in the writings and memories of those like yourself that N'awlins will rise from its watery stasis. Your vision will be the blueprint for the resurrection. Excellent tribute.

Peace and (((Hugs))),

It will all return, but I pray that it is not brought back too hastily. Before people are allowed to live there again, the problems that stirred this disaster need to be addressed. Everything from building better levees to having a definative plan to deal with disaster, evacuation and care of the people who remain behind. These things must begin on a local level and be completed before it will be a safe place for people to live again. To live through this disaster once is horifying but to see it played out again would be criminal. I do understand that the city needs revenue, but to put a band-aid on a bleeding artery and pretend that all will be well is short-sighted at best. I do love this poem, Karla, your words are an inspiration. I too, pray that the music will begin again, I just hope that we are thinking with our heads and not with our hearts when we reopen the city.
Take care,
Sherry

This is unique, majestic and "BLUEitical". Its contents, and its rhythm under the control of the fingers of the "Lady of Lights"
make "KATRINA: Let The Music Play", singing its poetic magnificence.

I salute You, Poet!
