I'm right under your nose, but you choose to ignore, stepping over me in your haste to get away, lest my poverty soil your thousand dollar shoes -
And here I am, in front of you, but I am a phantom... a ghostly reminder of what could happen if the cards turn up, and I should have stayed hidden behind the walls of shame -
And so you look away.
Do you think I like living like this, not knowing where my next meal will come from, not knowing if I'll be able to get out when the next disaster comes, or wondering what will happen if I get sick and can't work?
In order to live, I have to work; too bad my paycheck isn't paying me. It's a struggle to pay the bills; it's a struggle to keep a roof over my head or find food to eat; it's a struggle to find someone who gives a damn.
Mostly, it's a struggle to survive.
It's a battle I am determined to win, despite the odds stacked against me; I just wish y'all would understand that I am not America's dirty little secret...I am one of the Working Poor.
The world needs to read this; it should be a wake up call as to how the rich are treating those who are not like them. Such a shame, such a g.d. shame!! Powerful, no-holds barred, gutwrenching write; should be required reading of those who don't know what it is like to live from paycheck to paycheck; maybe it'll get them off their fat rich asses and help us who are only trying to pay our bills and forage ahead! Very well done; I salute you, Poetess! BRAVA!

You gave us a real picture of how the working massess feel. This is one side of the survival coin. If we look the other side may be the situation is much worse than this. Great poem, karla.

You are certianly telling it like it si Karla, and it's not just the working either, I spent my whole life working and they put me off on a micical pension that can't even pay my bills.
Sad world out there
Karla it has ever been so, wealth keeps its face turned to more wealth, and refuses to look at anything else, lest it has to do something.Excellent poem on the topic, though frustrating for those who are in need.
well, Karla, in one short little poem you've managed to make me clap my hands and say "YES!," cry, and inspired me to write something I've felt compelled to write for a long, long time but have been too damn worried about the consequences or perceptions... you knocked it out of the park and straight to the heart with this one. it goes to my library. thanks for finding the courage to write it.
