"All over our state, all over
the world, spiders are weaving,
rodents pause, whole forests
lean at once. And only some of the
things that shine are mean."
-from "Memorandum," by William Stafford
9/11: Random Thoughts (Four Poems) (c) 2006, Karla Dorman
"Learning to Cope"
I sit here, replaying it over And over. I don't need the T.V. To bring it all rushing back - once was Enough. It haunts my nights and lives in My words, images and emotions Displayed. Something I must write about.....
"For E. and R. (You Know Who You Are)"
i can't imagine what you went through on that day. how you must have wept... is that why you laugh through tears? do you hide the pain behind the smiles on your face? i can't imagine what you went through - know i care.
"Days of Infamy" (For Sherry Heim's Challenge)
Darkness rains from clouds of ash And chases me through the maze, Down the canyons of sleep. Unknown territory, yet Somehow, vaguely familiar; We've seen this thing before. Our mouths pucker ass-tight as We watch it unfolding live And in brutal color. Our moans of disbelief keen In sympathetic wails to The sirens, gathering. People aren't supposed to Die, not like this, not like this, Burn, jump, or die helping. Impotent expressions of Sadness, rage and fear arise With the Towers' demise. Images are imprinted On the footprints of my soul, Scarring it forever. In quiet moments of the Night and in broken poems, Too well, I recall that day.
"Random Thoughts" On this sad morning, the bells toll moments of silence, punctuated by the tears of names read out loud; the list is endless, random names who've become family. Afternoon finds us lost in private pain trickling down our faces in silvered tears of poems understood by thousands of witnesses who saw it happening. And evening sets, but not on the names, the thousands we pay tribute to: random thoughts reflected in the pool of memories, of a day we will never forget.
Each of these is excellent, Karla and thank you so much for taking me up on my challenge, you have done a stunning job. Is it just me, or did anyone else feel like we were being quieted yesterday; like the whole atmosphere was that we should just suck it up and deal with it? Like some demigod Librarian was standing in the wings bellowing SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I felt like we were supposed to believe that 9-11 was just some nasty nightmare that we all need to wake up and forget about; well, I cannot and will not forget. I will go on and I will live a productive life, but I will not forget because I was forever changed on that day, and those who perished deserve to never be forgotten. There, but for the grace of God goes each of us and the next time, and believe me there will be a next time, we may not be the lucky ones. To forget the past is to be doomed to live it again. Powerful words, Karla!!
Take care,
Sherry
I well remember Floria Kelderhouse saying that "Pain makes the pen fly"... you have gained so much poetic stature this year, it seems to me Karla, and I am pleased to see your biog note saying "full-time poet"... can we writers BE anything else anyways??!! But this soul-wrought series of poems shows you at your showcase best... "And only some of the things that shine are... Karla!!" I could feel every word in the heart of your soul. Bless you and thank you. K xx
What fitting and powerful poems, Karla! Each one bringing back those "unimaginable" images of that day! Yes, those images, first viewed, will remain locked in our hearts.

Great poems all and I can understand all the emotions. And you are right. We don't have to see it on TV to remember it. It is always there, reminding me the wickedness of people who use God for their evil deeds. Victor
Karla,
I dedicate each "anniversary" to prayer and intercession...for the survivors, the families and friends, the loved ones, the heroes, the President&First Lady, and our Nation at large.
Through your heart-piercing quadripartite,"Random Thoughts", I realize you were right there with me..and praise God for you.
On my desk sits a small picture frame with a slip of paper in it.. it simply says 'I'm Cali bound!'.. the last words I received from a friend. Your four poems are a fitting tribute... well written each one!
No one could have said it better Karla! This is a sterling set of poems that shines like the sun on a day that is burned into our psyche never to be forgotten! Outstanding! Eileen
God Bless
