Thinking about those on the streets inspired this.

Poem Artwork

... toss
and turn,
trying to
make the street a
softer bed.  winter
makes a lousy blanket.
the
bitter
chill finds its
way to the soul
through holes in my shoes,
chattering teeth and bones ...

what i would give to be warm.

(c) 2007, Karla Dorman (11/26)

"finds its way to the soul" and Jesus soul also! It is a descriptive elegantly written poem that highlights this modern plight fully! What are we collectively doing about it this christmas in his name?
I know some don't want charity, and one can't force it upon them, I offered one such person begging for hot coffee in front of Tim Hortons, he received my alms with gratitute, but refused the invite to my studio which has a bed couch, I told him it was always open to him on cold nights, I have not seen him yet, although it's only a blocks walk. and ditto Georges comment! Bless you Karla for bringing this before Christmas! Jasmin Horst

Karla-
My heart goes out to many in them in different circumstances!
Forgotten lonely souls, looking for answers everywhere...
I give now and then to those I see around here (near stores and walking by the corners, wish I could do more) There has to be BETTER answers! Maybe the new year will be the cure!
STay Positive!
YOur style of writing here, is stark naked reality, making many aware!
GREat Poem!

The way you communicate in writing, the form you so well have mastered, reads as if a person was thinking it. It puts the reader right on that street; feeling the chill. Good writing, Karla.

So very sad but so true I see so many homeless
Where I live and my heart breaks!
most of the times we don't appreciate what we have
So much as often taken for granted
I help them but wish I could help more!
Excellent Message within this poem Give
Thanks for what you have and help those who need your help!

Karla, do you know the mag 'The Big Issue'? The homeless sell it in England, elsewhere also i think- write/produce some of it too, with professional journalists -it's a good mixed read of a mag -they accept quality poetry, had an arrangement with abctales.com, uk writer's site - thought you might like to know about them as you have several on the theme - will find a link...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Issue for starters! Good poem Karla - Nicky xx

P e r f e c t . P e r f e c t . in execution. P e r f e c t . in
tone. P e r f e c t . in every way. Truly chilling, and all too true. How easy it is to forget how lucky we are (most of us). Let's pray that as a nation, we become more compassionate. Put our money where it should go!! Sure, there is the occasional individual who steps on his or her feet to the point he or she ends up homeless. But far more of us (and I mean us) end up begging for handouts due to mental illness that is not properly treated or losing a job to
"downsizing," or abuse by a spouse whom the law refuses to punish -- even slap the hand of -- or countless other problems that are caused by societal inequities, and sometimes, just plain stupidity or
misplaced hostility. T h a n k . y o u . for this thought- and emotion- provoking and p e f e c t-ly executed work of art. Wow
is much too weak. Love always, and then, Pea xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoX

Wow! This touches in many ways on different angles...
I always wonder, if the homeless are really there, or are they just visions for us, in order to learn how to share...
Excellent job Karla!

Karla, I think it's ironic that we were thinking about the same subject; the homeless. Your pen is short and painfully true to the plight of those who need the most help.

winter
makes a lousy blanket.

It surely does, for far too many homeless souls - both human and pet. And you've inspired me to at least donate some warm blankets to those in need this year.

O, Karla, this is powerful and heartbreaking!

"What I would give to be warm".

Such a simple request; yet a painful reality for far too many. We must do all we can to eradicate this cancer called homelessness! Very well penned; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, Karen Lynn. :(
