Written in response to Ed Kostro's "They Need Our Help, Now." ALL Veterans should be honored and thanked for their service.
I AM OKAY: this just came to me. Hesitated to post it, but this must be addressed.

... been home twenty four years:
never left the land I swore to
protect and defend, never heard
"Incoming!" or saw buddies cut
down before my eyes. I do not
know war, but injured, just the
same: my bed, the battlefield.
The enemy brandishes pain as a
sword, buries it to the hilt: I die
a thousand deaths. Tylenol and
Motrin, ineffective; psychiatrists
tell me it's in my head. Returning
hero or burden to my country?
No wonder soldiers are holding
guns to their temples, waiting for
government to pull the trigger:
Might as well. Every time they
deny disability claims; each time
a Veteran loses their home and
winds up on the streets; every
time one goes hungry; each time
they forget to say thank you is a
bullet to the brain: thanks for
nothing. Honor to be forgotten ...
is this what's meant by being killed by "friendly fire"?! I have never understood the term... a bullet's a bullet, if you ask me. You paint it raw and plain, Karla... kinder the bullet that does the job cleanly, than the "bullets" that ridicule, maim and rub salt into the wound... It's a total disgrace and infringement on human dignity at the very, VERY least. Shout it loud. xx

We should do more for our military!
Thank you for this powerful piece Karla. It is unfortunate that in our society which was based solely on the notion of "rugged Individualism",and not the mentality that says we are all in this together; be our brother's keeper. Instead many people who have all of their needs met look down on those who suffer and blame them for their own demise "derogation of the victim". These suffering masses are not weak, helpless, or sick in the head. They are our Heroes. Thank you for posting this piece.J'nia <> <

I am with Ed below here, nothing wrong to say the truth and what is in your heart. Maybe this time a President will honor ALL the servicemen and women and make true the politicos promises.
YOU are terrific...and captured what so many of us wish we could say loud enough for those who hold the purse strings to fix....but they don't have ears...they don't have hearts...they don't have anything but pockets bursting with our hard earned cash...while our young men and women give up so much day after day.... great write Karla, hugs, lindalaw

Those who give our veterans the shaft should go in their stead, go into battle, see what they have to endure. There would be a problem: they'd turn chickenshit-yellow and run the other way or join the enemy's camp. Shame on them, and shame on U.S. for forgetting sacrifices made by our veterans and their families! They should not lack for anything!! Powerfully penned sadness; this should NOT be!!

Karla being a daughter and niece of Vets, I am angered at the way our nation treats our Veterans an excellent write, and a sad reminder of the state of this nation when it comes to our Vets...Thank you for serving...
