the day i dread comes quickly.
the day an anniversary i would
rather ignore, but can't: images
burnt into my eyes, the anger
and sadness felt won't permit
it. i'd like to think i've matured,
moved on, but the memories
scorch the back of my throat
like acid, coming back up at
odd moments to remind me
of what was lost. they linger
in my words, an underlying
current to always remember,
no matter what i write about.
they invade my space. they
hijack the news, until each
channel is the same. i live
with the ghosts of 9/11, who
never rest. they're there. all
they ask is to not be forgotten.
To forget is to become the enemy of freedom, Karla. Well written and I really like the form you have chosen because it feels like the years as they melt one into the next, yet the sting for that day will remain, forever, like salt in a raw wound. Beautifully expressed.
Take care,
Sherry
How can ANYONE forget what has become a defining moment in World History, let alone the catalogue of over 3,000 personal tragedies? Yet I wholeheartedly agree with Peter and there are other horrors of attitude ensuing that perhaps perpetuate and exacerbate that wrong, nationally and internationally. And other atrocities and savageries in the name of faith and nations occur daily - by ommission as well as by intent. The pain of 9/11 is everywhere ever present but please God we find ways to ensure that such a thing does not happen again. Together we make history happen and we are all aware of massive episodes done in the name of the God we uphold or our nations that we would rather forget. It's neither a case of forgiving nor forgetting... but always remembering and moving forward with renewed purpose and wisdom in the light of what those sacrificed might say were they able to speak. A real "weeping in Ramah" write, Karla. I feel this deeply. xx
A day and a time Americans will never forget or, hopefully, forgive. Too many people burnt, crushed or leapt to death... Too many lives taken that day, and the generations that lived through it... your generation, Karla, and my generation will never forget or, hopefully forgive. The next gereration, however? 12/7/41 and 9/11/01? These dates may be as distant to the next generation as the Civle War is to us.

The ghosts are alive and well in the form of the Patriot Act, a crumbling empire, a lost Republic. What saddens me the most is to see the trajectory we've taken since that day. And that 3,000 were sacrificed in a mass-casualty event so that we may sacrifice thousands, millions more in mass-casualty events overseas. If violence is used to counter violence, oh where indeed where violence end? Excellent poetry Karla.
NEVER EVER FORGET!
10 MILLION - NAY, 100 MILLION MUSLIM TERRORISTS WILL NEVER BE WORTH 3,000 INNOCENT LIVES!!!
TK...
peace and blessings, Carole~
