must be the scariest damn thing ever, although sudden earthquakes can be a nightmare too. my cousin robert was in that huge oklahoma city twister back in 1999. no basement either, just hopped in the closet and got religious real fast!!!
Although my heart goes out to the victims of these catastrophe the government can only be held responsible for so much. Acts of nature or God...happen world wide and it is not only the governments that could be doing more. Private home owners often don't put in basements because it is cheaper not to, contractors and construction companies could provide safe rooms, but I think what it comes down to is money and sadly that is a reality of life.

I live on a hill with no basement and the EF1 that went through here was bad enough. I know I wouldn't make it through an EF5. Wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives and so much more in that mess of tornados in April. Each governor is responsible for declaring their state a disaster area then here come the Feds with their loans. Like what good does that do. Wonderful write. Liz
Ya know, Karla, I would think that basements are no problem in Texas as for the most part it is well away from the ocean and such...they say Sea Isle, my home town cannot have basements because it is an island surround by the ocean & bay, now that I can understand, but you are so far from any real water, or so I see on the map...try to stay safe anyway...hunker down in the bathtub with a mattress over you both...couldn't hurt & hey you might get a bath while in there...thats why I am glad we have no tornadic activity around here, then I don't have to go in the tub...;-)e
